GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING
The geotechnical engineers on Crawford’s team are experienced in foundation investigations, design, construction, and monitoring throughout California’s varied geologic settings. Our capabilities extend from the design and construction of conventional foundation systems, such as shallow footings for lightly/moderately-loaded structures, to complex mat and deep foundation systems, such as drilled piers and driven piles to support heavily loaded, buildings and bridges. The team’s extensive experience stems from routine designs associated with roadways, embankments, bridges, buildings, retaining walls (including soil-nailed, MSE, rock-bolted slopes and soldier pile walls) and landslides.
ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
Crawford’s geologists and engineering geologists provide a wide range of geological services ranging from site-specific to regional studies for engineering geology, geotechnical and environmental projects. Our personnel are proficient at: review of published geologic maps and literature; surface mapping of geologic units, and structures; aerial photographic interpretation of geomorphology; collection and interpretation of subsurface geologic units using a full range of direct and indirect drilling and down-hole testing methods; and soil and rock coring.
MATERIALS TESTING & INSPECTION
Crawford, with 80 staff across 7 locations, offers expert geotechnical construction observation, monitoring, and testing services. Our services include subgrade and compaction testing, asphalt and concrete sampling, and special inspections (e.g., rebar, welding). Fieldwork is documented daily with reports typically provided within 24 hours. Quality assurance testing and equipment calibration are also part of our process. Upon project completion, a final report is provided, detailing field observations, lab results, and certifications, all aimed at reducing construction costs while ensuring quality. Our Santa Rosa Lab is proud to be an approved US Army Corps of Engineers Validated Laboratory for construction materials testing!
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS
Our staff includes California-registered Professional Engineers, Geotechnical Engineers, and Geologists with experience conducting Initial Site Assessments, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) conforming with ASTM E1527-05 and the All Appropriate Inquiry (AAI) standard. Typical scope-of-work for Environmental assessments include database search and records review, interviews, site reconnaissance, testing, and reporting.
LABORATORY
Crawford provides comprehensive soil and aggregate testing services, including nuclear gauge testing, relative compaction, and aggregate sampling, supported by Caltrans-certified laboratories equipped for both field and laboratory evaluations. Our facilities are fully qualified to perform Special Inspections required by agencies such as the Division of the State Architect (DSA), United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Office of Statewide Health and Planning Development (OSHPD), and the International Code Council (ICC). We conduct testing in accordance with ASTM standards and offer ACI-related services including concrete curing and compressive strength testing. In addition, our AASHTO certifications in Quality Management Systems and in the testing of asphalt mixtures, soils, aggregates, and concrete ensure that our work meets rigorous industry and regulatory requirements across a wide range of construction disciplines.
ALTERNATIVE PROJECT DELIVERY
Our experienced team has completed various alternative project delivery methods, including Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build, and Progressive Design-Build. Project types include schools/educational facilities; federal; military; water and wastewater; and transportation.
