What You’ll Do

• Lead and manage complex or high-value engineering projects from initiation through closeout, including detailed scopes, budgets, schedules, and resource plans.
• Serve as the primary client manager, maintaining long-term public- and private-sector client relationships, and oversee multidisciplinary teams including internal staff and subconsultants.
• Complete detailed technical review of engineering calculations and reports for foundation design, slope stability, levee design, pavement design, settlement, seismic design, liquefaction, and lateral spreading, using software such as Ensoft (LPile, APile, Group), Shaft, GeoStudio, and Settle3D.
• Maintain full accountability for project financial performance, including forecasting, invoicing, and profitability, and manage project risks and contractual issues.
• Lead proposal preparation, fee development, and interview presentations.
• Mentor Project Managers I, Senior Engineers, and Project Engineers, and contribute to strategic and operational improvements within the engineering department.

Who We’re Looking For 

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or a related engineering discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in California required.
• Minimum 8 years of progressive engineering experience, including at least 3 years of direct project management experience.
• Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle.

Job Summary

The Special Inspector is responsible for conducting on-site inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with building codes, specifications, and safety regulations. This role plays a critical part in maintaining quality and ensuring that materials and workmanship meet required standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. On-Site Inspections
   • Perform regular inspections and testing of construction work, including soils, aggregates, asphalt, concrete, steel, masonry, and other materials, to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.
   • Document inspection findings and communicate any deficiencies or non-compliance issues to the project manager or contractor.
2. Testing and Sampling
   • Conduct field testing of construction materials (e.g., soil, concrete, asphalt) and collect samples for laboratory analysis.
   • Ensure proper testing procedures are followed and that equipment is calibrated and maintained.
3. Documentation and Reporting
   • Prepare detailed inspection reports, including observations, test results, and any corrective actions taken or needed.
   • Maintain accurate and organized records of inspections, tests, and communications related to the project.
4. Collaboration and Communication
   • Work closely with contractors, project managers, engineers, and architects to ensure project specifications are understood and followed.
   • Provide technical advice and guidance to construction teams regarding quality control and compliance issues.
5. Quality Assurance and Compliance
   • Ensure that all work complies with local, state, and federal building codes, as well as industry standards (e.g., ASTM, AASHTO).
   • Participate in quality assurance programs and assist in the development of quality control plans.
6. Safety Oversight
   • Promote and follow safety practices on construction sites, ensuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
   • Report any safety violations or hazardous conditions immediately.
7. Continual Learning and Development
   • Stay updated on current construction practices, codes, and regulations through ongoing education and professional development.
   • Attend training sessions and workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma
• Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in construction inspection or materials testing.
• Certifications: Certification as a Special Inspector (e.g., ICC Special Inspector, NICET, ACI, AWS, Caltrans) is highly desirable.

Working Conditions

• May require working outdoors in various weather conditions and standing for extended periods.
• Occasional travel to different job sites as required.
